This is so awesome. My friend Tyler D.S.T. pointed out to me after my original Jun Ken Po blog that there's actually an internet chart suggesting 25 more hand shapes with which to play this game.
I looked up RPS25 (Rock Paper Scissors 25) and there are a number of websites. Here is one: http://pandawhale.com/post/3935/rock-paper-scissors-with-25-gestures
I knew the game came from Japan, but I did not realize that this is also known as roshambo, courtesy of a stop through Europe!
I really like all the creative hand shapes, though nowhere do I see Pencil, which I mentioned before that my cousins and I invented decades ago. I enjoy reading the suggested reasons for why each shape might win - my favorite is that Cockroach sleeps in fur of Wolf. I'm not sure how that is a winner but it makes me laugh.
I'm going to have to print both the hand chart and the reasons before I play this. And if I'm playing with Olivia, I'm going to have to read/define most of the reasons to her since she's still learning to read. I'm not sure she'll know words like "terrifies" or "rebukes."
I'd like to add another hand shape to this long list. Holding your thumb and index finger together, with pinkie outstretched, you cast your gesture as Wine. That's right. Because if I have to bring a set of directions to play the new and improved RPS25, I will need the wine to relax when I'm done!
Got a good hand shape to suggest?
PS: Tyler, you're on for RPS25 at the next Thursday outing! Loser buys winner a beer. Ha!
