Pierced tongue?

June 13th, 2014

Following Olivia's fresh ear piercing, a gift for her seventh birthday, Olivia's interest in piercings has increased. She asked me, "Mommy, does it hurt to pierce your tongue?"

I had to stop walking and turn my head to look at her. "You are not getting a tongue piercing," I preempted.

"I know," she said. "But does it hurt?"

"I don't know. I don't have one. I guess so. Looks sore," I ventured. "Why do you ask me?"

"I see lots of people with tongue piercings," she said.

"Where? School? Where are you meeting these people? Do I know them?" I asked with not just a little neuroses.

"I don't know them. I see them out in public, like at the mall," she clarified. Whew.

"So... did you want a tongue piercing?" I continued.

"Would you let me get one?" she said.

"NO," I firmly stated. Am I having this conversation with a seven or a 17 year old?!?

Based on how Claus responded to her getting her ears pierced, I don't think I should even share this conversation with him!

Ah-HAH! I told you so. See my comment to the June 11 blog entitled "Pierced ears." I wonder how you would answer if Olivia asked "Mommy, why do people get their tongues pierced?" Maybe the easiest answer would be "Just wait until 7th grade when your teacher will explain it in the "Pono Choices" unit.

Hey Diane: ... accidentally biting my own tongue creates such excruciating pain!!! ... I don't want to know what a piercing feels like ... haha ...

... a pierced tongue isn't so bad, when you think about it ... no one really sees it, unless you want them too ...

Those w/ pierced tongues talk really funny like a speech impediment. A guy w/ one told me that when he accidently bites down on it while eating it hurts like hell. Oh fun. I don't get those facial piercings they are not attractive IMO. When I see those mouth/cheek piercings I first think they have food on their face. But then piercings are manini cuz they can be taken off. Wait until the kid wants a tattoo. I've seen young gals and women with those around the neck and across the collarbone. ugh.
